Athletic Program Building

What is the backing for our words? We are fighting every day for the very right to define the words to which we lay claim and what they mean to us. Culture is something we strive to develop on a daily basis and will claw to maintain. If we are not intentional about our culture, our tenets will just be words. We will be intentional. On a personal level, at my core being, my values as a coach are:

I believe…

… a top tier program wins at every level 7th, 8th, 9th, JV, Varsity

… the head coach should be present at all levels, not just coaching the varsity

… in the concept of “kaizen” and the unending pursuit

… in fundamentals first and foremost. Skills and technique are the bedrock of action

… that we can always work harder and that we should strive to outwork everyone

… that teachers and coaches are called to the profession and have a spiritual duty

… coaching is just as much about maturing young people as it is basketball

… in kids’ earnest sincerity: they want to learn, be pushed, to grow, to improve

… kids want discipline and want to be held accountable

… athletics is the ultimate metaphor for life

… in the purity of sport and play and the natural joy that comes in competition

… that we are never finished growing, learning, improving, arriving

… with all my heart in good manners, chivalry, respect, and decorum

… a program’s system should be tailored to the players, not players fitting a system

… that coaches of all programs, are walking billboards for the school

… body language is as important as the spoken word

… that our self talk and how we think about ourselves will bring it to fruition

… that we will get what we work for. The result is not an accident

… I work for and serve the players and assistant coaches, not the other way around
